Mid-year hostel admission in Chandigarh: when seats open and how to apply

Most girls hostels in Chandigarh treat mid-year admissions as an exception. We treat them as routine. Here is what to know about timing, fees, and the path from inquiry to enrolled seat.

Why mid-year admissions matter

Most Indian schools and hostels admit students once a year, in March–April, and treat any later request as a special case. This is convenient for institutions but inconvenient for families. The reality of life — a parent's posting change, a daughter's sudden need to move schools, a hostel seat that opens up in another city, a delayed decision finally made — does not always align with the academic calendar.

At DAV Girls Hostel, mid-year admissions are routine. Seats open through the year as residents graduate, move, or change plans. When a seat opens up and a family is ready, we welcome the new resident immediately, with hostel fees pro-rated from the date of joining.

When seats typically open

April–May: The largest annual intake as new academic year begins. Most seats fill in this window.

July–August: Some seats open as families reconsider after the first term. Usually a small number.

October: Post-October vacation, occasional re-allocations. A meaningful number of seats sometimes open here.

January: The second-largest mid-year window, as some residents graduate or move. We typically have 5–10 seats opening in this period.

Any month: Throughout the year, seats may open for individual reasons. We maintain a short waitlist by region.

How the mid-year admission process works

The admission process is the same as a full-year admission, but compressed into 2–3 working days because timing is often urgent. The nine steps are: inquiry form, counselling call, campus visit (Saturday or arranged), registration form and fee, brief student interaction, document verification, admission confirmation letter, fee deposit, and enrolment with room allocation.

For families travelling from outside Chandigarh, we can typically schedule the campus visit, document verification, and student interaction in a single day. This is particularly useful for hill-state families who can only travel once.

How fees are pro-rated

Hostel fees are calculated from the date of joining for the remainder of the academic year. If the annual fee for the chosen room type is ₹1,85,000 and the daughter joins in October (so roughly 8 months of the academic year remaining), the pro-rated charge is approximately ₹1,23,000 for that academic year. The refundable deposit and one-time charges are paid in full at the time of joining.

Mid-year admissions do not carry a premium charge. The same fee structure applies whether the daughter joins in April or in January.

How to initiate a mid-year admission

The first step is a phone call or WhatsApp message to our resident warden Ms. Anamika at +91 98554 94563, or an inquiry form submission via our website. If a seat is available in your daughter's class group, we will respond the same working day with the next steps and a proposed campus visit date.

If a seat is not immediately available, we add the family to a short, region-segmented waitlist and contact you the moment one opens. The wait is typically measured in weeks, not months.
